Facts About Bamboo Clothing
Antibacterial Qualities of Bamboo Explained
A few years ago Beijing University discovered how to produce fabric from bamboo. Since then, the technique of manufacturing top quality fabric has been in development, bringing new innovations in fibre mixing and other processes. The whole process is a natural one, maintaining the organic heritage of the product.
It is antibacterial and antifungal. This quality keeps bamboo fabric fresher for longer, more hygienic and healthier. Unlike other anti-microbial fabrics which require chemical treatment, bamboo fibre is naturally anti-microbial and requires no harmful chemicals. It contains bamboo ‘kun’ that prevents bacteria from cultivating on it. This substance bonds tightly with bamboo cellulose molecules during the normal process of fibre growth and is retained in the fabric.
Bamboo is crushed and pulped and the cellulose containing the bamboo Kun is extracted to make the fibre. The Japanese Textile Inspection Association also found that even after washing the fabric 50 times it still possessed this function. Bamboo products are odour resistant, staying fresher for longer because the fibre naturally stops bacteria from spreading.
It’s these antibacterial qualities that have helped bamboo become so incredibly successful in the wild. Because it’s developed an amazing barrier against bacteria, almost all types of bacterial pests that try to grow on the plant are killed on contact.
What’s really astounding, though, is the fact that this particular quality isn’t destroyed during the process of turning bamboo culms into fabrics. In fact, a study by the CTITC (China Textile Industry Testing Centre) showed that after introducing bacteria to a sample of bamboo fabric a 99.8 reduction in bacteria occurred over a 24-hour period. Another study by The Japan Textile Inspection Association showed that bamboo fabric could eliminate over 70 of introduced bacteria over a 24-hour period.
Bamboo fibre made into socks can stop foot odour and prevent athletes’ foot. Operating masks and gowns have been produced to help prevent cross infection in sterile environments. Bamboo fabric also resists yeast, mould and fungus cultivation.
No other fabric has this quality so where your cotton shirts will eventually show signs of yellowing in the pits (and no matter how much deodorant we use, we all sweat!), the antibacterial matter will kill the bacteria in sweat thus ensuring that your shirts retain a clean, fresh appearance. The natural antibacterial qualities of bamboo will also help naturally eliminate odours.
Bamboo fabric has an incredible softness. It has a natural sheen to the surface and feels similar to silk or cashmere. At a microscopic level it has a round, smooth surface which makes it feel luxuriously soft next to the skin.
It absorbs water. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world because it has an extraordinary ability to absorb water. It retains this unique and remarkable property when in fabric form. It ‘wicks’ away moisture and sweat from the body which then evaporates keeping you naturally drier and more comfortable.
It is breathable and has an anti-static quality. Its natural ability to breathe keeps skin drier and more comfortable for longer. Its anti-static quality means it does not cling or stick to the skin.
It stays 2-3 degrees cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold. In the heat bamboo is naturally cold to touch, as is the fabric made from bamboo fibre. This temperature control is due to the bamboo fibre being filled with various micro gaps and holes which give excellent moisture absorption and ventilation. This helps to keep the skin feeling cool and comfortable rather than hot and sticky. For the same reason it is also warmer in cold temperatures when used as a base layer because the air gets trapped and warmed.
It is strong and durable. Bamboo fibre has a high abrasion proof capacity and tenacity. In the Far East bamboo is used as scaffolding because of its strength. Certain species of bamboo have a tensile strength equivalent to steel.
It is excellent for babies and for sensitive, allergy prone skin. It is not treated with chemical treatments that can irritate the skin. Its smooth and round fibres act as a non irritant. Bamboo Kun resists the spread of bacteria on the skin without adverse effects or irritation. Bamboo fibre garments achieved a score of 50 on the UPF scale (Ultraviolet Protection Scale), which amounts to a 98% reduction in UV activity reaching your skin. The comfort, warmth, breathability and softness in products made from bamboo along with its hypoallergenic, antibacterial and antifungal qualities are ideally suited for a baby’s skin. Nappies made from bamboo fibre are 80% more absorbent than organic cotton.
